Last night’s rates are the lowest since Oct 16/17. That’s true for both total rates and Orionid rates. In the next few days the total rate should fall into the low-20s which was the average value in early October before the Orionids ramped up. Luckily we still have the Taurids and a relatively high rate of Sporadics to keep things interesting over the next month.
Bob traveled to Alpine, CA where the sky is much darker than his usual location near San Diego. He notes “The Orionids are still producing in excess of ten meteors per hour. The number of Epsilon Geminids is surprising as this shower is nearly over. Perhaps most of these are actually Orionids?”
